Why does intimate hygiene require special care?

Intimate area hygiene is an important component of overall health that affects comfort, confidence, and well-being on a daily basis. The intimate area has its own natural defenses - microflora and an acidic pH level that prevent the growth of harmful bacteria. But this balance is very sensitive, so improper care can lead to irritation, discomfort, or inflammation. Daily intimate rituals should be simple, delicate, and conscious, because excessive «diligence» can be as harmful as a complete lack of care. The intimate area does not need aggressive cleaning, only gentle care, taking into account its characteristics.

The main problems arise when women use regular soap, scented shower gels, water that’s too hot, or wash their intimate area too often. These practices disrupt the skin’s natural acid barrier and can cause itching, burning, dryness, a change in odor, or discharge. It’s important to care only for the external genitalia—the areas where this protective barrier cannot function on its own. Proper care is about preventing infections, ensuring daily comfort, and maintaining health without unnecessary intervention.

Personal hygiene involves a few simple rules that are important to follow every day:

  1. Wash at least once a day, as well as after intense physical activity.
  2. Cleaning the external genitalia with warm running water.
  3. Wash from front to back to prevent intestinal bacteria from entering the genital area.
  4. Avoid using scented products and excessive friction.
  5. Gently pat dry with a soft towel, avoiding rough movements.
  6. Change your pads every 3–4 hours during your period.
  7. A selection of underwear made from natural, breathable fabrics that don't cause chafing.
  8. Use gentle gels or pH-neutral cleansers that do not disrupt the skin's natural flora.

In addition to daily hygiene practices, it is especially important to consider the impact of external factors. Tight-fitting clothing, synthetic underwear, thongs, and panty liners can create a «greenhouse effect,» leading to irritation, rashes, and fungal infections. Using the wrong laundry detergents or excessive amounts of fragrances in underwear can also trigger allergic reactions.

It is important to avoid overusing wet wipes—they should only be used when water is not available. Similarly, douching without a doctor’s recommendation is not advised, as it disrupts the natural balance and may increase the risk of infections. Regular medical checkups and preventive consultations with a gynecologist help detect changes early and maintain good health.

Signs that may indicate improper care or an imbalance in the microflora:

  • itching or burning in the genital area;
  • a feeling of dryness;
  • redness, rashes, microtraumas;
  • the appearance of a strong or unpleasant odor;
  • unusual discharge.

If these symptoms last longer than a few days or recur regularly, you should see a gynecologist. Early detection and treatment of these issues can help prevent complications and maintain good health.

Hormonal changes also affect the condition of the intimate area. During adolescence, menstruation, pregnancy, after childbirth, or during menopause, sensitivity and pH levels may change naturally. These changes do not always indicate a problem, but they do require more gentle care.

Normal microflora is an important part of the immune system, so it should not be «washed away» by harsh treatments. It’s important to listen to your body, notice changes, and respond to them carefully.

Maintaining sexual health also involves adopting additional habits that can help reduce the risk of irritation:

  • a selection of hygiene products without dyes or strong fragrances;
  • washing your hands before and after using the restroom;
  • washing off after swimming in pools or bodies of water;
  • Avoid wearing a wet swimsuit for long periods of time;
  • Regularly replacing linens and washing them at a high enough temperature;
  • A balanced diet to support the body's natural microflora.

Intimate hygiene isn’t just about cleanliness—it’s also about caring for, respecting, and understanding your body. It teaches you to love and treat yourself with care. Healthy habits, choosing the right products, and paying attention to your body’s signals help you stay comfortable every day, prevent discomfort, and maintain a high quality of life. The intimate area deserves just as much attention as any other part of our body, as it directly affects a woman’s well-being and self-confidence.
